It May Be Time to Consider Assisted Living

Nov 12, 2018

Most people value their independence as they age. They want to continue to live their lives in the same way that they have throughout their adult life. Unfortunately, for many people, as they age, that no longer becomes an option. The body isn’t something that will stay in peak condition forever, and many people find that health concerns or general deterioration result in the need for help. This is where assisted living becomes an option.

There are countless facilities located throughout the country which allow people to receive the assistance they need. This allows people to at least live in comfort as they age, often with other people who have similar needs or interests. Assisted living facilities can be the perfect way to balance independent living with living necessities.

What Does Assisted Living Help With?

There are a lot of different types of assisted living facilities that are available. Typically, the type of facility will vary based on the amount of specific health problems the people living there undergo. A facility that is just assisting with some basic chores is not going to be as in depth as one which has a full time nurse and medical personnel on site 24 hours per day.

The first level of assistance provided has to do with daily living. There are many conditions like serious arthritis which can make basic daily activities very difficult and time consuming. Assisted living will help with things like cooking and doing basic cleaning or chores. For those with further deterioration of motor functions, it can also assist with bathing, eating or other bathroom activities.

Another important aspect to assisted living is assistance with medical conditions and medications. This is especially true for people who might be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. A proper staff can assist in ensuring that important medication is always taken at the right time and never missed.

Things to Look for in an Assisted Living Facility

When trying to choose an assisted living facility, there’s a lot of things that need to be considered for yourself or for a loved one. There are many aspects and details of a living facility which will not be immediately apparent. A tour of any facility is important and there are many details which should be observed. Some of them include:

  • Details of Medical Care - Each facility will explain just how many people on staff will have medical training or if there are nurses and doctors on site. In addition, many people may need to spend time at hospital. Will the room be kept and paid for? Will the charging be stopped during the stay? These are important questions that need to be answered.
  • Room Details - Some facilities actually don’t allow many activities within the room themselves. Things like smoking. In addition, are the rooms furnished, or can people use their own furniture. If a possible tenant has a pet, they need to make sure they can bring the pet along as well.
  • Financial Details - Different facilities will have different costs associated with them. It’s also important to figure out what happens if for some reason money is no longer available. What kind of leeway is there before a tenant has to leave.
  • Customization - Many people staying at an assisted living facility may have a wide variety of needs that aren’t normally covered. Some facilities will offer customized programs for their residents.

Every person is unique and has different needs. Be very thorough before considering any assisted living facility to ensure that it's the right fit. It’s a big move after all.
